Ask AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE before signing a housing lease.
It is very important to consider how nice your landlord and roommates are, the availability of the school shuttle buses, and safety of the environment.
DO NOT rely merely on the first person you meet who wants you to live in the place. The landlords may look nice in the beginning but they might not be honest.
We DO NOT recommend you to sign the lease from India before looking at the apartment.
Where to look?
The university provides temporary accommodation (max. 3 nights to avoid overpayment) for new students in the dorms during August 2007, on a first-come-first-served basis. Check the details here.
The Housing Search section on the SCI Classifieds Forum is the best starting point to look for advertisements for available accommodation or to post your own queries, especially if you plan to share accommodation with other Indian students.
The Stamp Student Union offers information via the Off Campus Housing Services and the Commuter Student Involvement. Finder service is available at their office. Ads for available accommodation are also posted on notice boards in the Stamp Student Union building.
Many Indian students live in the following communities:
Graduate Hills & Graduate Gardens (considered part of campus): Managed by Southern Management Corporation. All of you must have received information about this in an envelope that you received with your I-20. The important feature of this locality is the proximity to the school and cheaper rent. However, you need to apply well in advance to get house here. It is difficult to get a new house here after you come to college park. But, there is always a possibility to stay with Indian students already staying here who are in need of roommates. So, if you have not formed your groups, you can explore this option.
University Square Apartments, Greenbelt: Managed by Lerner Corp. Located in Greenbelt, a neighboring city, accessible by university shuttle and public transport buses (excluding Sundays), this place provides home for most of the desis in the university. The apartments are bigger compared all other localities. Since, this is quite large locality, if you are in a group and are searching for a new house, this should be your first target. Also, you may want to look for the students already staying who are in need of roommates.
Seven Springs Village: This is another good place to live with nice locality and decent rents. It is easily accessible by the university shuttle that will serve this complex via a shorter route starting Fall 2006. Also, you have access to public transport, so you are not stuck on weekends when university shuttles do not run.
Lakeside North: This is also managed by Southern Management corporation. It is on the university shuttle route.
Other apartments from Southern Management: SMC has special offers for University Students with large number of apartments to choose from, but ask people about them before moving in.
